Lagos PDP: Torn apart by crises

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been embroiled in a battle of survival. Many factors have contributed to the intractable crises that have prevented the party from fulfilling its aspiration of giving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a run for its money in the last general elections. MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE examines the issues that have bedeviled the party and how it can be repositioned for future elections. All is not well with the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It has been a story of one crisis after another and it appears there is no end to the division rocking the one-time largest party in Africa. All efforts to resolve the crises have proved abortive. It has been a case of accusation and counter accusation among the major party stakeholders. The situation got worse, following the defeat of the party in the last general elections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The outcome of the election released bottled up anger that has been nursed over the years. Super Falcons lose 1-0 to France despite brave performance in 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup group game

Nigeria will now wait for the outcomes of other group stage games to know whether they will be among the best losers. The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 1-0 to France in their last group game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 2019 Polls: INEC urges accredited observers to submit election reports

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday called on accredited observer groups yet to submit their reports on the 2019 General Elections to do so. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the call in Abuja, at the presentation of a joint report on the 2019 general elections to the commission by the International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI). Yakubu said that the reports would enable the commission “take a global view of the recommendations.” He pledged that the commission would study every recommendation made by observers on the conduct of the elections. He said that the commission welcomed criticisms of the elections adding that “friends criticize, but detractors condemn.” He recalled that the commission on Friday received the report of the European Union Election Observation Mission....

Witness narrates to court how man raped ex-girlfriend

A prosecution witness, Insp. Usman Sanni, at an Igbosere High Court, Lagos on Monday, June 17, 2019 narrated how he took the statement of a 31-year-old sickle cell anemia patient, who was allegedly raped by her ex-boy friend. Imonitie Otuma, 34, is standing trial on a two-count charge of threat to life and rape, preferred against him by the Lagos State Government. His first arraignment was sometime in 2016 when he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. However, after Otuma violated his bail condition, he was therefore remanded in prison. The witness, who was led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Mr Babatunde Sumonu, said that sometime in July 2015, the case was transfered from Maroko police station to him at Panti Investigating Police Department. Gov. Makinde renews appointment of Bishop Moradeyo as board chairman

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has renewed the appointment of Bishop Ademola Moradeyo as the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Christian Wing). A statement by Mr Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, said that the appointment was renewed on Friday. The statement equally stated that the governor named Pastor Layi Adisa as Chaplain of the Government House while Pastor Emmanuel Folayemi Akanmu, was appointed as Deputy Chaplain. Moradeyo is currently the Bishop of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Diocese of Ogbomoso. Clearing agent, 41, docked over alleged N3.9m theft

A 41-year-old clearing agent, Ayodeji Oyeleye, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over an alleged N3.9 million theft. Oyeleye, whose address was not given in court, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretenses and stealing. The Prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in December, 2018 at the Apapa area of Lagos. Emuerhi said that the defendant obtained the sum of N3.6 million from the complainant, one Ebenezer Akinnagbe, under the pretext of clearing a 40ft container from Tin-can port in Apapa, on his behalf. Man remanded for sexually molesting neighbour’s 12-yr-old daughter

One 33-year-old, Sunday Nwokolo, who allegedly sexually molested his neighbour’s 12-yr-old daughter has been remanded in prison, pending legal advice from an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 17, 2019. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule- Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons. Sule-Amzat ordered the police to send back the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. The defendant, who resides in Masamasa area of Lagos, was charged with defiling a minor. Sanwo-Olu tells Lagos State residents to ensure full compliance with laws

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday charged residents to ensure full compliance with existing laws and regulations in the state. Sanwo-Olu harped on compliance with laws while briefing newsmen at the Lagos House, Alausa, shortly after a meeting with security chiefs in the state. Edo State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has berated Governor Godwin Obaseki over the delay in sending the official proclamation letter for inauguration of the 7th House of Assembly. Ghana secures $843 million from EU to support local banks and create jobs

Local banks in Ghana are set to benefit from an $843 million (€750 million) guarantee from the European Commission. The benefit is under the NASIRA financial programme of the EU which uses guarantees to allow local banks to on-lend to underserved entrepreneurs within the European neighbourhood and Sub-Saharan Africa. It targets portfolios consisting of loans to youth, females and migrant entrepreneurs (including refugees, returnees and internally displaced people) and the goal of these guarantees is to allow local banks to provide loans to groups they normally perceive as too risky. Apapa Customs generates N170.4bn in 5 months

The Apapa Customs Command in Lagos on Monday said it generated N170.4 billion between January and May. The Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Mohammed Abba-Kura, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) in Lagos.
