Army says you should no longer call it 'Operation Python Dance'

‘Operation Python Dance’ will no longer be the code name of the army's Southeast operation. The Nigerian Army has changed one of its 'memorable' code names from Python Dance (Egwu Eke) to Dance of Peace (Atilogwu Udo). Barclays Bank Ghana is changing to become Absa Bank effective February 2020, here’s why

The Barclays Bank Ghana has announced that it will be changing to become Absa Bank. The change is expected to begin on February 2020. The bank said the change has become necessary because it has recognised that its customers’ needs are changing, and are investing in digital platforms to offer more convenience. Ghana’s Senior Minister responds to Auditor-General on $1m Kroll payment

Ghana’s Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo has responded to allegations by the Auditor General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, that he led the Ghanaian government to pay a private firm Kroll and Associates $1 million for no work done. In a letter addressed to Mr Domelevo, the Senior Minister said he wants to explain and set the record straight on the issue involving the private firm. The minister in his letter dated October 8, 2019, said approval was obtained for the request for single-source procurement of professional services despite claims by the Auditor General that he failed to seek approval from the Procurement Authority. The Auditor-General accused Mr Osafo-Maafo of making full payment of more than GHC1 million to Kroll and Associates with no proof of work done. Ghana’s Producer Price Inflation for September 2019 increases to 9.7 percent

Ghana’s Producer Price Inflation for September 2019 has increased to 9.7 percent. This shows a slow increase in the average prices of goods produced in the manufacturing subsector of the economy. The Producer Price Inflation is the average change over time in prices of goods and services quoted at the factory level before it gets to the market. The Deputy Government Statistician, David Kombat who explained the factors that caused the increase in the PPI, noted that the activities in the manufacturing sub-sector contributed heavily in the period under review. He, however, noted that on a month-on-month basis, “the rate represented a 0.5 percentage point decrease in the producer price inflation relative to the rate recorded in August 2019, which was 10.2 percent." Ghana Union of Traders Association demands closure of Ghana's eastern borders

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is impressing on the government to immediately close the Eastern border to prevent possible smuggling following the closure of Nigerian borders. The president of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng, explained that the Ghanaian authorities must close down the Eastern border to imports from Nigeria to check smuggling of goods into Ghana’s market. “At this point, the situation has become two-fold and we foresee goods being smuggled through the Eastern Corridor due to what is happening in Nigeria. Already, Ghanaian traders are locked out from Nigeria. Goods are also locked up there. The other point will see our markets flooded with smuggled goods if not checked. Man tortured to death over N3,000 debt

Police confirms killing of a trader who was murdered for owing N3,000. A man identified as John Yakubu has been tortured to death for owing a N3,000 debt. One Gabriel Monday had reported Yakubu to a vigilante group at Trade Centre Area of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, to help him recover the debt from Yakubu. Monday was said to have given Yakubu beef worth N7,000 to sell but remitted only N4,000, which prompted him to report Yakubu to the group for the debt recovery. Acting on Monday's report of Yakubu's debt, the vigilante group consisting four members, including two women, then arrested and tortured Yakubu to death in a bid to make him pay the money. Lagos is the most indebted state in Nigeria in the first half of 2019, with total public debt at N992.38 billion.The Nigerian State is taking more loans, which will see an increase in its debt profile by over 74%%.We looked at the top 5 most indebted states in Nigeria, using the latest Debt Management data. Lagos is the most indebted state in both foreign and domestic borrowing in the first half of 2019, with total public debt at N992.38 billion. Business Insider SSA's analysis of the Debt Management Office data shows that Lagos' domestic borrowings dipped by 7.35% to N479.04 billion from N517 billion recorded June 30, 2018. Lagos state's foreign debt stood flat at $1.42 billion (N513.33 billion) in Q2 2019 when compared to the same period in 2018.
